Paris, France – Egypt’s men’s football team kicked off their Paris 2024 Olympic campaign with a frustrating 0-0 draw against the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

The stalemate left both teams with a point apiece in their Group C opener.

The match began with the Dominican Republic showing unexpected aggression, nearly taking the lead in the 14th minute through Peter Gonzalez.

However, their celebrations were cut short as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened, disallowing the goal and keeping the scores level.

Despite being favourites going into the match, the Pharaohs struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the game.

The Egyptian attack, usually known for its potency, found itself frustrated by a well-organized Dominican defence.

As the match wore on, Egypt pushed for a winner but lacked the clinical edge in the final third.

The Dominican Republic, making their Olympic football debut, grew in confidence as they successfully held off the seven-time African champions.

The result leaves Egypt in second place in Group C, level on points with the Dominican Republic.

Spain currently tops the group with three points following their 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan, who sit at the bottom without any points.

Egypt’s coach will have much to ponder as they prepare for their next match.

While a point is not a disastrous start, the Pharaohs will be aware that tougher tests lie ahead in the form of Spain and Uzbekistan.
