Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, has pledged to fully implement the Oronsaye Report if elected president in the 2027 general election.

The former Vice President made the pledge in a statement issued on Friday by his official spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo.

He said his administration would implement the report transparently immediately after inauguration.

Atiku said his government would first audit all existing government agencies.

According to him, the audit would establish their number, functions and relevance.

He criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for failing to implement the Oronsaye Report despite earlier promises to do so.

Atiku said his administration would scrap unnecessary agencies and merge institutions with overlapping functions. It would also block financial leakages and use the savings for healthcare, education, infrastructure, job creation and social protection.

“I will not ask Nigerians to make sacrifices while government continues to waste money. Nigeria does not need more promises. Nigeria needs action,” Atiku said.

He said efforts to reduce the cost of governance would start with the presidency while promising to review the activities and maintenance of government officials and lead by example.

“I will make the government smarter, more efficient, and accountable so that more public money works for the Nigerian people,” he said.

The Oronsaye Report was submitted in 2012 by the Presidential Committee on the Restructuring and Rationalisation of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies.

The committee recommended the merger, restructuring or scrapping of several government bodies. The proposals aimed to reduce the cost of governance.
