New York, Oct. 19, 2023 — The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) will publish its 2023 Global Impunity Index, an annual list and report on countries where perpetrators of journalist murders continue to evade justice, on October 31, 2023. This year’s index covers the period from September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2023. It will include insights on the long path to justice for journalists murdered in retaliation for their work, underscoring the need for political will to conduct investigations and deliver justice. CPJ’s Global Impunity Index calculates the number of unsolved journalist murders as a percentage of each country’s population. Only nations with five or more unsolved cases are included on the index. Since 2008, CPJ’s Global Impunity Index has recorded a proliferation of deadly violence towards the press worldwide. In 2022, CPJ reporting found no one had been brought to justice in nearly 80% of the 263 cases of journalists murdered in reprisal for their work worldwide. The launch of CPJ’s 2023 Global Impunity Index precedes the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists on November 2, 2023.
