Many killed as Mosque collapses during prayer in Lagos

Lagos, May 26, 2024 – Many worshippers were feared dead on Sunday afternoon when a mosque collapsed in Lagos State during prayers.

According to witnesses, the mosque collapsed in the Papa Ajao area of Lagos State, during afternoon prayers.

Many dead and injured bodies have been moved from the rubbles with many more feared trapped.

But the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) in a statement said the incident happened at Yusuf Street, off Ladipo Rd, Papa Ajao.

It said that the incident involved a storey building which collapsed as a result of an excavator machine which mistakenly hit it while working on the road expansion.

According to LASEMA, the impact of the collision resulted in collapse of the mosque while prayer was ongoing.

It noted that search and rescue of the trapped victims is ongoing with the supervision of the Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu.

He gave the number of casualty as one, while the injured are five.
