Abakaliki – Gov. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi has restated his administration’s promise to give maximum support to farmers, especially women to ensure that the woman “grows her food”.
Nwifuru, represented by the Deputy Governor, Mrs Patricia Obilla, on Tuesday, made the remarks during the inauguration of “SheGrowsHerFood” Programme of the Association of Micro-Credit Institutions of Nigeria (AMCIN) in Abakaliki.
Nwifuru emphasised that the movement would change the face of agriculture in the country.
According to him, the state government is also committed to expanding programmes, increasing funding, and exploring innovative solutions to address the root causes of hunger.
“Our farmers are our dependable allies in our march towards food sufficiency, food security, poverty eradication and job creation in the state.
“Shegrowsherfood” programme is a step taken by government to address deficits in the value chain process that will make a significant impact on the lives of many people.
“We have the will as government and we want our women to leverage this platform for enhanced farming output.
“In line with my campaign promises, we have embarked on fertilizer production, approved and procured agricultural equipment, among others, to enhance the economic base of our farmers,” the governor said.

He appreciated the Association, the Central Bank of Nigeria and other critical development partners for supporting his dream and drive to take agriculture to a greater height.
The Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced Persons (BERWO), a pet project of the Wife of the Governor, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, complement efforts of the government in making the state a better place.
Mrs Nwifuru commended her husband for the sponsorship, support and commitment in improving agricultural practice in the state.
“Through this initiative, we aim to enhance food security, empowering women economically and equipping them with the knowledge and skills to grow their own food to generate incomes,” she added.
In his remarks, Mr Israel Esom, the Federal Executive Secretary of AMCIN, said that the Initiative was to enhance food security and sustainable agricultural practices.
“Your commitment to the initiative is commendable,” saying to women, “you are the heart and soul of your communities in enhancing agricultural practices in the state.”
Mrs Comfort Nweke, South-East Zonal Coordinator of AMCIN, said the programme is aimed at empowering women for food security in the country.
According to Nweke, the association is a drive towards economic transformation, integrated farm practices, sustainable development and empowerment.
Engr Patrica Stan-Dioka, Member, Advisory Board of AMCIN, promised to collaborate with the state government and BERWO to achieve success.
The event featured exhibition of improved varieties of crops and display of inputs.
