NUJ NAN Chapel 2024 Press Week kicks off Monday

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Lagos State Chapel has concluded all arrangements and activities to stage an epoch-making and memorable Press Week, 2024.

The NUJ-NAN Executive and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) said in a statement that the event would kick off with a walk for fitness on Monday.

According to the committee, the walk will begin at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere at 8.am on Monday, Sept 23, with all members walking from the stadium to NAN Premises at the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.

According to committee, there shall be through medical tests and talks by the authority of the Lagos State Sports Commission before the health walk.

“Journalists, most times, do not have time for recreation and exercises due to the overwhelming burden of mental work and reports each day including weekends.

“This health walk is earmarked to help media workers especially in NAN and others who might want to join.

“There is going to be various free medical checks including diabetes tests, hence we implore whoever that wants to be beneficiary to stay away from food that morning before the test.

“For safety and security on the road, the committee has also invited National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other security agencies.

“The participants will also be thrilled by musical band from the takeoff points to the terminating point,” it said.

The committee said that Wednesday, Sept. 25 had been earmarked for Cultural Day, saying the event would witness the display and showcase of various cultural diversities and dishes in the nation.

The committee said that the Public Lecture/ Symposium for the Week would hold on Thursday, Sept. 26 at the NAN Multi-purpose Media Centre at 10.00am.

According to it, the Key Note address will be delivered by Dr AMINU MAIDA, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The committee said that the theme of the lecture was “THE ROLE OF JOURNALISM IN ADDRESSING THE IMPACT, OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY ON YOUTHS.”

“The 2024 Press Week lecture is strategic and apt as it focuses on the trending global issues around technology- the gains and the pains.

“The world is fast moving and being shaped and reshaped each day with innovative trends in technologies.

*With these trends and its attendants effects on the people, especially the young Nigerians, various speakers and discussants would also unravel this subject to help the Nigerian young population.

“We have invited students from secondary schools and Mass Communications Department, YABAYECH to be part of the audience.

According to it, other notable invited guests would also delve into the discussion including Dr Segun Musa, the Chairman of the Occasion and Chief Consultant, Global Transport Policy; SL Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos State, Malam Ali Mohammed Ali, Chief Host and Managing Director, NAN among others.

“It is interesting to state that the Special Guest of Honour for the Occasion is His Royal Majesty, OBA ABDULFATAI OYEYINKA (OYEGBEMI 11), the Ojora of ljora Kingdom, Lagos State,” it added.

The committee said that the committee, the week would be wrapped up with a visit to Orphanage and Old People’s Home on Friday, Sept 27.

“The NUJ NAN chapel recognises the role and power of media in addressing the ills and shaping the world.

“As we observe this Press Week, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting a vibrant and independent press as well as the cause of developmental journalism as against fake news and sensational journalism.

“We acknowledge the challenges faced by journalists today, from censorship to disinformation. We stand in solidarity with journalists who courageously pursue the truth for the development of our country.

“Let us take this opportunity to promote developmental journalism. We believe that access to accurate information is essential for an informed citizenry and a healthy democracy,” the committee said.
