A 60- year-old woman, Adenike Okunbanjo, was on Monday docked in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 99 pieces of iPhones worth N14.85 million.
The defendant, a businesswoman who resides at 1, Alade St., Temidire, Ibafo, Ogun State, is charged with conspiracy and theft.
The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Raji Akeem, told the court that the offence was committed on Jan. 16, 2017 at Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Akeem said that the iPhones worth N14. 85 million, were shipped to Lagos from the U.S. by Mr Bolaji Ogunsanya to be delivered to someone named “Mr Azeez” in Lagos.
The prosecutor said that the consignment arrived in Lagos but got missing at the airport and all efforts to locate it failed.
Akeem said that the complainant furnished the police with the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of all the phones.
The prosecutor also said that one of the IMEI of the phone was traced to the defendant and she was tracked and arrested.
Akeem also said that on searching her house, four of the iPhones were found.
The offence, he said, contravenes the provisions of sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B. O Osunsanmi, granted the defendant to bail of N2 million with two sureties in like sum.
Osunsanmi adjourned the case until Sept. 28 for mention.
In another similar case and development, a Grade I Area Court in Abuja, on Monday sentenced a scavenger to 12 months imprisonment for destroying Abuja Electricity Distribution Company’s transformer fence and stealing.
The police charged Awal Abdullahi, 22, of Chikakore junction Byazhin, Abuja with mischief and theft.
Abdullahi, pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency.
The Judge, Mr Sulyman Ola , gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N40,000.
Ola also ordered the convict to pay N50, 000 compensation for the damaged fence.
Ola warned the convict to desist from committing crimes.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Chinedu Ogada, told the court that the convict committed the offence on Aug 1 and was caught and brought to Kubwa Police for proper investigation.
Ogada said that on the same date at about 6: a.m the convict criminally and maliciously broke into AEDC transformer fence worth N 50,000 and stole the transformer cover.
Ogada said that during police interrogation and investigation, the convict could not give a satisfactory account of his action.
The prosecutor said the transformer covers was recovered from the convict and the offence contravened the provisions of sections 327 and 287 of the Penal Code
