Attempted Murder:  Court Orders Mental Evaluation For Woman, 20

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Kano, on Wednesday, ordered that a 20-year-old woman, Halima Umar, should be taken to the Dawanau Psychiatric Hospital in Kano for a mental evaluation.

The defendant, who lives at Gadon Kaya Quarters Kano, is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy, house trespassing and an attempt to commit culpable homicide.

The Magistrate, Farouk Ibrahim-Umar, ordered that the defendant be taken to the psychiatric hospital to ascertain her mental health.

He, however, adjourned the matter until June 27, for further mention.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Elias Ekainu had told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 29, on Jan Bulo Quarters Kano.

Ekainu alleged that on the same date at about 1:30 p.m., the defendant criminally conspired with one Kamalu now at large and trespassed into the house of one Fatima Aliyu situated at Jan Bulo Quarters Kano.

“In the process, the duo attacked the complainant poured the powder into her eyes and stabbed her with a sharp knife in her stomach.

“The complainant, Aliyu was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano for treatment”.

The plea of the defendant was not taken by the court.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened the provision of Sections 97,343 and 229 of the Penal Code.

Similarly, a Kaduna High Court on Wednesday ordered that a 34-year-old labourer Alhassan Nuhu, who allegedly engaged in anal sex with a six-year-old boy be remanded in a correctional centre.

The police charged Nuhu, who resides in IGP Estate Suleiman Street, the Millennium City of Kaduna State with rape.

Justice A. A. Bello, who declined to admit the defendant to bail, ordered that he should be remanded in a Kaduna correctional centre.

She adjourned the case until July 20 for a hearing.

Earlier the Prosecution Counsel, S.K. Williams had told the court that the defendant raped the minor on April. 11.

Williams said that the defendant lured the boy with N50 into his laundry shop located at NPJ Estate Millennium City and had anal sex with him.

She said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 257 and is punishable under Section 258 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2020(as amended).

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
