No fewer than four persons were killed while eight others sustained varying degrees of injuries on Saturday in an accident involving a CNHTV trailer and a Mazda bus at Foursquare in Ogunmakin on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Mr Ahmed Umar, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, confirmed the incident in Abeokuta.
Umar said that the accident occurred at 8: 45pm and was caused by excessive speed and loss of control on the part of the bus driver who rammed at the stationed truck.
The sector commander said that the crash involved a CNHTC trailer marked XA 802 KKM and a Mazda bus with registration number SHK 684 XA.
He explained that a total number of 13 people were involved in the accident which comprised of 12 men and one woman.
Umar added that eight people got injured, all men while four persons killed comprised of three men and one woman.
Umar said that the injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere while the deceased were deposited at FOS morgue, IPARA.
The sector commander described the crash as an avoidable act, saying that if caution was put in place, using common sense speed limit especially as it was raining.
He urged motorists to always obey traffic rules and regulations especially on speed violation.
He commiserated with the family of the crash victims and also enjoined them to contact the FRSC command in Ogunmakin area of the state for details of the crash and reclaim the properties of the victims recovered from the scene of the crash.
However, a total of 17 persons died and 23 injured within two days in separate accidents on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in April.
Seven persons died while nine others sustained injuries in an accident involving a Mazda bus and a truck at the Ogunmakin axis of the expressway.
The crash came a day after six persons died and one injured at the Kara area of the expressway.
Also a few hours earlier, a Toyota Hiace bus went up in flames, killing four persons and injuring 13 others at the Fidiwo area of Ogunmakin.
Another crash involved a Mazda bus with LSR 696 XS as its registration number and a truck with registration number T-4889 LA.
The FRSC’s Sector Commander in Ogun, Ahmed Umar, blamed the accident on excessive speeding and loss of control by the bus driver, which made him ram into the moving truck ahead of him.
“A total 16 persons, 15 of them male adults, were involved in the accident.
“Five men were injured while six men and one woman died in the mishap,’’ he said.
Mr Umar said they took the injured victims to Victory Hospital, Ogere, Ogun, for treatment while the deceased were deposited at FOS morgue in Ipara, also in Ogun.
The sector commander described the crash as avoidable if the bus driver had not sped excessively on the slippery highway as it was raining at the time of the accident.
Mr Umar commiserated with the families of the crash victims and also enjoined them to contact the FRSC command in Ogunmakin area for details and reclaim the belongings of the victims recovered from the scene.
