Alex Otti has defended the appointment of Ezinne Chinyere Ben-Kalu, insisting she earned the role on merit after a strict selection process in Abia State.
Otti Explains Selection Process
Meanwhile, Otti spoke on Saturday, April 25, 2026, during the wedding of his Aide-de-Camp, ASP Emeka Ogbonna, at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia. He said he personally interviewed seven candidates for the position.
However, he stated that Ben-Kalu outperformed all others by a wide margin. He noted that she emerged as the top choice even before authorities reconstituted the board.
Furthermore, Otti explained that administrative timing delayed the appointment. He linked the delay to plans to restructure the board following the relocation of the Chief Medical Director of the state teaching hospital.
Merit Over Politics, Says Governor
In response, the governor dismissed claims that politics influenced the decision. He stressed that his administration does not consider party ties, state of origin, or ethnicity when making appointments.
Consequently, Otti said competence remains the only standard. He pointed to Ben-Kalu’s strong intellect and wide international network as key factors that set her apart.
Furthermore, he said her profile aligns with his government’s focus on performance and global best practices in healthcare delivery. He added that Abia needs skilled professionals who can deliver results.
Administration Opens Doors to Talent
Meanwhile, Otti cited Claire Omatseye as another example. He said she contributes to Abia’s healthcare system despite not being from the state.
However, he reiterated that Abia remains open to talent from any background. He maintained that value and expertise drive every appointment under his leadership.
Consequently, Otti addressed public concerns linking Ben-Kalu’s appointment to her marital ties to a political figure. He said such claims distract from the real issue of competence and performance.
Focus on Results, Not Speculation
In response, the governor urged the public to focus on qualifications. He said performance should remain the key measure for public service roles.
Furthermore, he reaffirmed his commitment to building a results-driven system. He insisted that merit will continue to guide decisions across sectors in Abia State.
