The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN), in collaboration with the Christian community, will celebrate the 2026 National Bible Day on May 5 across the country.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Benjamin Mordi, Head Public Affairs, BSN, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

NAN reports that the National Bible Day is set aside annually to celebrate the gift of the Holy Bible and to encourage Nigerians to reflect on, share, and live by its teachings and values.

Speaking ahead of the event, the General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of BSN, Pastor Samuel Sanusi, described the Bible as “the compass to abundant life and prosperity,”

Sanusi warned that neglecting it amounts to neglecting peace. He said the day provides an opportunity for individuals and communities to reaffirm their commitment to biblical values and experience the transformative power of God’s Word.

“National Bible Day is a wonderful occasion to encourage everyone to engage with the Scriptures. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people,” he said.

He expressed appreciation for the role of BSN in making the Bible accessible and affordable to Nigerians.

He noted that the organisation remains committed to deepening engagement with the Word of God.

The society urged Nigerians to participate in the celebration through studying, meditating on, and applying biblical teachings in their daily lives.

“National Bible Day is observed annually by churches, schools and other Christian organisations nationwide to highlight the importance of the Bible and promote its study and application.

The organisation currently has the full Bible translated into 27 Nigerian languages, with ongoing translation and revision projects in nine others at various stages of completion.

BSN noted that completing a Bible translation project over an eight-year period costs a minimum of ₦150 million,” he added.

NAN reports that the Bible Society of Nigeria is a non-profit interdenominational Christian organisation.

BSN is involved in translating the Bible into Nigerian languages, publishing and distributing the Scriptures, as well as raising funds to support Bible work and related programmes.
