Wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has described child labour as a crime against humanity, conscience and faith, calling for renewed commitment to protecting children from exploitation.

Soludo, also the Founder of Healthy Living Initiative, made the remark in a message to mark the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour.

The World Day Against Child Labour is observed every June 12 to raise awareness about the exploitation of children and promote actionable steps to eradicate child labour globally.

The commemoration had the theme – “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults”.

She stressed that every child deserved the freedom and opportunity to learn, dream, play and grow in a safe and promising environment.

“Child labour is not just a crime against humanity; it is a crime against conscience and faith,” she said.

Soludo said no child should be burdened with responsibilities that robbed them of their childhood, education, health and future prospects.

According to her, governments, communities, families and other stakeholders must work together to safeguard the rights, dignity and welfare of every child.

The governor’s wife urged stakeholders to address the social, cultural and economic challenges that expose children to exploitation while creating opportunities for them to thrive.

“As we observe the World Day Against Child Labour, let us renew our collective commitment to protecting the rights, dignity and welfare of every child.

“We must continue to create opportunities that allow our children to thrive while addressing the social, cultural and economic challenges that expose them to exploitation,” she said.

Soludo reaffirmed her commitment through the Healthy Living Initiative to promoting programmes and advocacy efforts that support the wellbeing, education and development of children across the state.
