Cleaner In Court For Allegedly Stealing Lodger’s N780,000

Emmanuel Ogege, a 20-year-old hotel cleaner was on Friday docked before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 1,300USD (N780, 000) belonging to a foreign lodger. 

Ogege, who resides at 1, Old Union Road, Dopemu, is facing a charge of stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp Glory Godday told the court that the offence was committed on June 22 at Dan- Mongan Hotel, Dopemu-Agege area of Lagos.

Gooday said that the defendant used a spare key and opened the room where the foreigner  lodged

The prosecutor said that the defendant was caught through the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera.

He said that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. O Odufuyi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of  N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Odufuyi adjourned the case until Aug. 9 for mention.

In the same vein, a Kano Senior Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced 30-year-old Abdullahi Abubakar to four months in a Correctional Centre, for stealing 25 litres of vegetable oil valued N31, 000.

The defendant, who lives in Dorayi Quarters, Kano, was convicted on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Elias Ekainu, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 16, 2022, at Brigade Quarters, Kano.

Ekainu said that on the same date at 1.00 p.m., the defendant criminally conspired with one Sadiq now at large, and stole the complainant’s 25 litres of vegetable oil in his shop situated at Brigade Quarters, Kano.

“During the course of an investigation, the said vegetable oil was found in possession of the defendant.”

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.

Ekainu said that the offence contravened the provision of Sections 97 and 287 of the Penal Code.

Senior Magistrate Binta Ahmad-Mohammad sentenced the defendant to two months imprisonment, or an option to pay a fine of N5, 000 for conspiracy.

Ahmad-Mohammad also sentenced Abubakar to two months imprisonment or an option to pay a fine of N10, 000 for theft.
