Colombian head of the national prisons agency, on Tuesday said 49 inmates died during an overnight riot in a prison in the southwestern Colombian city of Tulua, according to Reuters.

General Tito Castellanos, the head of the INPEC agency, told local Caracol Radio that 30 people were injured describing it as “a tragic and disastrous event’’.

The Andean country said it would release thousands of prisoners amid the coronavirus epidemic in 2020, after inmates rioted in protest against crowded conditions and lack of services.

There are 132 prisons in Colombia, built to hold 37,000 people but in reality more than 122,000 people are behind bars.

The largest prisons in Bogota are “La Modelo” where prisoners on remand are held and “La Picota”, where sentenced prisoners and those that will be extradited will be held.

Due to overcrowding, prisoners are sometimes mixed together in these prisons regardless of their judicial situation.

Similarly, the death toll in Russia’s attack on a Ukrainian shopping Centre in the central city of Kremenchuk has risen to 20 as the recovery and cleanup efforts continue, according to the Governor of the Poltava region, Dmytro Lunin.

“More than 60 per cent of the rubble has been cleared,’’ Lunin wrote on the Telegram messaging service on Tuesday.

This happened a day after the missile struck and destroyed the complex, triggering a huge search and rescue operation.

According to the latest information from the authorities, 59 people were injured and several dozen remain missing.

A three-day mourning period was declared, said Kremenchuk mayor Vitaly Maletsky.

The management of the mall is under investigation for allegedly failing to heed an air raid alarm, which was why the building had not been evacuated, he said

Ukrainian prosecutors meanwhile said a war crimes investigation had been launched.

Moscow claimed that the real target of the attack was a warehouse with Western weapons located a little further north of the mall, but that its detonation triggered a fire at the mall.
