Trophy handed over to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr Adegoke Fayoade

Mr Adegoke Fayoade, the Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, has commended officers for their impressive performance at the recently concluded 15th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA 2026) in Asaba.

Fayoade gave the commendation at a reception on Thursday at the Command Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos, to welcome the sports contingent.

He described the second overall position
as a significant achievement and a testament to the commitment of officers and the management team, noting that the zone competed strongly against other commands nationwide.

“The competition initially appeared to be an open task, raising concerns about adequate preparation. However, the team rose above the challenges and made the command proud.

“You performed excellently and made us very proud. You are the real champions,” he added.

Fayoade said the performance reflected the long-standing tradition of the Nigeria Police in producing top athletes who represent the country at both national and international events.

He referenced past police sporting events, including competitions held in Ibadan and Asaba, which had produced athletes who excelled in various international competitions.

The police boss further noted that whenever major sporting events take place within or outside Nigeria, police athletes are always among those representing the nation with distinction.

Fayoade expressed appreciation to the former Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, for sustaining police sporting events over the years, highlighting that organising such large-scale competitions requires strong leadership.

He also thanked the Commissioners of Police in Lagos State and Ogun, and other senior officers, for their logistical and financial support in ensuring the safe transportation and welfare of the athletes.

DIG commended the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, DCP Olubode Fakeye, for his presence and mentorship throughout the event, which motivated the participants.

Looking ahead, Fayoade urged the athletes and management team to begin preparations immediately for the next edition of the biennial event scheduled for 2028.

He emphasised that early preparation would ensure even greater success in future competitions.

The DIG praised the athletes’ resilience and dedication despite challenges, congratulating them and urging them to keep striving for excellence.

During the welcome address, Fakeye praised the athletes for their determination despite stiff competition from other commands, including Force Headquarters.

Providing a breakdown of the medal haul, Fakeye disclosed that Zone 2 secured 90 gold medals, compared to Force Headquarters’ 103, a difference of 13. The zone also won 79 silver medals and 77 bronze medals.

Fakeye explained that although Zone 2 had a strong overall medal count, the final ranking was determined primarily by the number of gold medals won, which placed them second behind Force Headquarters.

He credited Fayoade’s leadership and support including timely payment of allowances and logistical coordination for the team’s success.

He also expressed confidence that with continued preparation, Zone 2 could secure the first position at the next BIPOGA.
