Prof. Chike Osegbue of the Department of Political Science, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, has addressed issues concerning postgraduate examinations in the institution.
He said he cannot administer examinations to postgraduate students who failed to meet eligibility requirements stipulated in the university’s academic regulations.
Osegbue stated this while reacting to his three-month suspension by the university management over allegations that he failed to teach and examine students for a course assigned to him.
The suspension was conveyed in a letter dated Jan. 7, 2026, signed by the Registrar, Chris U. Obi, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, directing him to proceed on suspension effective Jan. 1, pending investigation by the institution’s disciplinary committee.
Speaking with journalists in Awka, Osegbue maintained that he was willing to teach the course but insisted that students admitted shortly before examinations and who did not attend lectures could not be examined.
He said university regulations required postgraduate students to attain at least 75 per cent lecture attendance over a minimum of nine weeks to qualify for examinations.
According to him, students who petitioned against him were admitted between eight and 28 days before examinations commenced and therefore failed to meet eligibility requirements.
The don urged the university’s Postgraduate Board to cancel examinations taken by ineligible students to protect academic integrity and uphold standards.
He further alleged lapses in adherence to admission and examination procedures and called for reforms to address what he described as declining compliance with academic regulations.
University authorities were yet to issue an official response to the professor’s claims at the time of filing this report.
