A potential air tragedy was avoided on Wednesday when an Arik Air Boeing 737 made a safe emergency landing at Benin Airport following an engine issue mid-flight.
The aircraft, with registration 5N-MJF, was flying from Lagos to Port Harcourt when the flight crew noticed abnormal signs from one of the engines during cruise.
What Happened on the Flight
According to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the pilots acted swiftly after detecting the problem. They followed safety procedures and shut down the affected engine as a precaution.
As a result, the crew diverted the aircraft to Benin Airport, the nearest suitable airport at the time.
The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members disembarked calmly. Importantly, no injuries were reported.

Initial Findings and Investigation
NSIB spokesperson Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji said early checks showed visible damage to the affected engine. However, she noted that investigators will confirm the exact cause.
Meanwhile, the Bureau has launched a full investigation in line with ICAO Annex 13 rules. An investigation team is heading to Benin to secure the aircraft, collect evidence, interview crew members, and retrieve flight data and cockpit voice recordings.
Authorities and Airline Respond
NSIB also confirmed it is working closely with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Arik Air, and other aviation partners. Together, they aim to determine what went wrong and prevent future occurrences.
Why This Incident Matters Although the flight ended safely, the incident highlights the importance of quick pilot response, aircraft maintenance, and strong aviation safety systems in Nigeria.
Aviation experts say early detection and strict adherence to safety rules helped avert disaster.
