Ebonyi Lawmaker offsets constituents’ hospital bills worth N59 million

Abakaliki, Nigeria – The Member representing Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr Nkemkanma Kama, has offset the hospital bills of his constituents in various health facilities, totalling N59 million.

Kama made the disclosure on Monday at Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area (LGA) of Ebonyi state during a town hall meeting on his sojourn since being inaugurated at the House, in June 2023.

The lawmaker said that he had sponsored free medical outreaches with that of December 2023, covering the 11 communities of his constituency.

“Some 444 health workers were engaged for the project with over 16,000 constituents benefiting.

“We are renovation primary health centres in the constituency, having successfully secured funds for the reconstruction of three of such facilities in the 2024 budget.

“Work has commenced in the heath centre at Ukawu community while that of others would commence soon.”

He remarked that through his school fees support scheme, he has offset school fees of his constituents in primary, secondary schools and universities, totaling N82 million.

“N200,000 each was given to 44 indigent law indigents as bursary in the 2023/ 24 academic session.

“We gave N500,000 each to indigent law school graduates with first class honours, as part of our excellent academic performance award, among others.

“We organised holiday tutorials for students in secondary schools to actively engage them academically during the period while donating several educational materials to schools in the area.”

Kama noted that he has attracted several road, mini bridge, culvert, rural electrification, school rehabilitation, agricultural, among other projects, within the period under review.

“Lawmaking is a primary duty of a legislator but we realised that there are other areas requiring our intervention to improve the lives of our people.

“I thank stakeholders in my constituency for their avid support to me.”

He noted that he had sponsored six bills, moved 11 motions and raised two important orders on the floor of the House.

Chief Darlington Okereke, former Member representing the constituency at the House, commended Kama for his pragmatic policies aimed at positively impacting the constituency.

“He has shown transparency in representation and such should be emulated by other leaders.”

Stakeholders of the constituency commended the lawmaker for his people-oriented policies and urged the people to secure the infrastructure he attracted.
