ABAKALIKI – The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, Comrade Samson Nwafor, has been honoured with an Award of Excellence by the Department of Mass Communication, Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, in recognition of his significant contributions to the journalism profession.
The award was presented during the department’s Nigerian Digital Frontier Conference and Awards Ceremony held at the university.
Organisers highlighted Nwafor’s dedication to ethical journalism, objectivity, and professional integrity.
Expressing his gratitude after receiving the plaque, Nwafor described the recognition as uniquely meaningful because it came from his alma mater.

“Unlike many other recognitions I have received in the past, this one came from the department where I graduated,” Nwafor said.
“The department made me what I am today; I became a journalist as a result of the training I received there.”
He dedicated the award to the growth of the profession, pledging to uphold high ethical standards that inspire upcoming media practitioners.
“Journalism is a profession that deserves more practitioners because the more we contribute, the better society becomes,” he added.
“I pledge to sustain this commitment to the profession, uphold standards that inspire younger practitioners, and continue living an exemplary life that encourages others to join.”
Nwafor extended his appreciation to the University Management, the Head of the Mass Communication Department, Dr. Simon Nwankwo, and the conference organisers for the honour.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to using responsible reporting to promote peace and development in Ebonyi State and beyond.
Earlier in his opening remarks, Dr. Nwankwo expressed gratitude to guests for attending, reaffirming the department’s resolve to promote core mass media values.
He noted that Nwafor and other awardees were selected due to their immense contributions to societal growth through media practice.
Also speaking, Prof. Nkechi Emma-Echiegu, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, commended the department for organizing the conference.
