
The Ebonyi State University has recorded its highest Matriculation in history with the matriculation of
11,500 students in an elaborate ceremony at its Permanent Site, Abakaliki.
The event saw a mammoth gathering of the matriculatiing students, existing students, staff of the university,, parents, guardians, relatives among others ,enthusiastically gathered to witness the induction of the new students.
Governor Francis Nwifuru advised the students to shun social vices capable of truncating their future which include: cultism, exam malpractice, prostitution, nudity among others.
The governor represented by the State Commissioner for Education Dr Donatus Ilang re-affirmed his administration’s unflinching commitment towards quality education in state.
“My administration has intervened in several ways to enhance the lot of the university through increased monthly subvention, increment of staff salary, offsetting of debts owed by the university, infrastructural facelift among others.
“I enjoin the newly matriculated student to be serious with their studies which is the sole aim of being in the institution.
“I commend the school management for effectively managing the affairs of the university as we assure it of continued support to meet set goals.”
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Michael Awoke said during the event that the school was poised to enhance academic and administrative excellence to achieve overall goals.
“I urge lecturers to focus on their mission of educating and guiding students with integrity for the future of the youths and Nigeria.
“The students should demonstrate good character and reject anything that could damage their reputation and that of the university.
“Lecturers should adhere strictly to their responsibilities as any form of extortion or unethical behavior towards students would be met with severe consequences.”
Awoke revealed that on assumption of office in 2025, he and the principal officers were confronted with the challenges of accrediting the faculty of engineering and environmental studies.
“We were equally confronted with the accreditation of seven other programmes but can happily announce that five out of the seven programmes had been fully accredited.
“The university is fully digitalised; students can access its programs at a click of button and can pay their school fees online without going through the bursary.
“My administration has eradicated cultism, inducement for grades, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, intimidation of students among others in the university.
A Former Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Ebonyi, Prof. Chike Onwe, who is the University’s Orator, urged the matriculants to be serious with their studies and shun acts that would distract them.
Miss Ifeoma Onwe, One of the Matriculants thanked God for the grace of admission into the university and pledged not to let her parents and school down.
Dignataries from the state and beyond attended the event seen as a stand point for actualising the educational ambitions of the new students.
