
Abakaliki, Nigeria – The Wife of Ebonyi Governor, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has reiterated her commitment to uplifting the widows and empowering women to promote the state government mantra of, “Peoples Charter of Needs.’’
Nwifuru made the remark on Friday in Izzi and Ebonyi Local Government Areas (LGAs) at the end of the inauguration tour of 26 three-bedroom bungalows for indigent widows across the state.
The provision of the 26 bungalows were through the “Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced Persons (BERWO) Foundation”.
Two widows from each of the 13 LGAs in the state have been selected to benefit from the programme.
Mrs Nwifuru urged the beneficiaries of the housing Project to continue to maintain and preserve the structures.
“This project is the vision of BERWO foundation working in line with the people’s charter of needs agenda of Gov. Nwifuru.
“We believe that leadership is about serving humanity, lifting the weak and giving voice to the voiceless. It is my prayer that these homes will replace sorrow with joy and give each of you a fresh beginning,” she said.
The Izzi Local Council Chairman, Mr Steve Nwankpa, said Mrs Nwifuru had given priority to grassroots development and greatly impacted on women and children across the state through her charity outreach.
Nwankpa lauded the governor’s wife for the vision geared towards the needy and promised more support from the local government to deepen dividends of democracy.
Mr Francis Ori, the state Commissioner for Housing, expressed satisfaction towards the selection of the beneficiaries, who are the most vulnerable groups in society.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Chinaza Otah from Ndigwe Nchoko Igbeagu in Izzi and Mrs Theresa Agidi from Onyirigbo Ishieke community in Ebonyi, lauded Mrs Nwifuru for the gesture across the state.
