In line with its commitment to strengthening public safety architecture and emergency preparedness, the Lagos State Government today joined the international community in commemorating World Emergency Number Day, reinforcing its call on residents to “Know Your Emergency Number… See Something, Say Something.”
The State Government emphasized that prompt access to the appropriate emergency lines can significantly reduce response time and, in critical situations, make the difference between life and death.
World Emergency Number Day is observed annually on February 11 to promote global awareness of emergency numbers and their responsible use. In Lagos State, the dedicated toll-free emergency lines are 767 and 112, accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at no cost to callers.
The General Manager, Lagos State Command and Control Centre (LSCCC), Mr. Femi Kennedy Giwa, made this known while addressing members of the press at the Centre’s headquarters in Alausa as part of activities marking the Day.
As the State’s central emergency coordination hub, the LSCCC receives distress calls and promptly mobilizes appropriate response agencies, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and other relevant safety agencies.
Speaking on the significance of the commemoration, Mr. Giwa stressed that public awareness and responsible utilization of emergency lines remain critical components of effective emergency management.
“Knowing the correct emergency numbers can make the difference between life and death. When residents dial 767 or 112, they are immediately connected to trained call agents at the Command and Control Centre who coordinate rapid and appropriate response. However, prank or hoax calls undermine emergency operations and may delay assistance to persons in genuine distress,” he stated.
The General Manager further commended the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for his sustained investment in public safety infrastructure.
He noted that under the Governor’s leadership, the Command and Control Centre has undergone significant technological upgrades and a comprehensive overhaul, transforming it into a world-class emergency coordination centre equipped to deliver efficient, technology-driven response services across the State.
As part of the commemoration, the Centre is embarking on statewide advocacy and sensitization engagements in schools, markets, and public institutions to educate residents on the importance of knowing the emergency toll-free numbers 767 and 112, situations that require emergency calls, the need to remain calm and provide clear, accurate information and the consequences of prank and hoax calls.
Residents are encouraged to save 767 and 112 on their mobile devices and to promptly report emergencies when they occur.
The Lagos State Command and Control Centre remains resolute in its mandate to safeguard lives and property through coordinated, technology-driven emergency response in alignment with the broader public safety objectives of the Lagos State Government.
In any emergency, residents are advised to stay calm and dial 767 or 112. Help is just a call away!
