World Press Freedom Day: Experts to Discuss Role of Independent Media in Peace Building

The Headfort Foundation for Justice will host a high-level virtual discussion to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, focusing on the critical role of independent media in fostering peace and accountability.

The event, themed “Press Freedom and Peace Building: Why Independent Media Matters Now More Than Ever,” is scheduled to hold on May 5, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. via X Space.

The forum will bring together media professionals and experts to examine the intersection of press freedom, security, and democratic stability, particularly in the context of emerging global and national challenges.

Speaking at the event are Promise Eze, a defence, security and conflict journalist; Fabian Ekeruche of the News Agency of Nigeria; Nkemdirim Patience Agwu of OGTV; and Mustapha Usman, Senior Investigative Journalist with the International Centre for Investigative Reporting.

According to the organisers, the discussion aims to highlight the indispensable role of a free and independent press in promoting transparency, holding power accountable, and preventing conflict through responsible journalism.

The foundation noted that increasing threats to press freedom globally underscore the urgency of strengthening media independence as a pillar of peace building and democratic governance.

Participants are expected to engage in conversations around media ethics, safety of journalists, misinformation, and the responsibility of the press in conflict-sensitive reporting.

The event is open to journalists, media practitioners, civil society actors, and members of the public.

For participation, interested persons can join via the foundation’s official X Space or follow its social media platforms for access details.
