Balogun Market fire

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending to a Fire outbreak at the famous Balogun Market which involved the topmost floor of a five storey building. 

According to the Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, the fire is however under control as mitigation are on to limits it spread.

It would be recalled that fire gutted a three-storey building on Martins Street, Lagos on February 2.

The quick response by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), saved traders from losing all their goods to inferno at 74, Martins Street, by LSDPC Building, Lagos Island.

This incident, happened a week after fire incident was reported at 5, Gbajumo Street, Balogun, Lagos Island.

Men of the Ebute Elefun, Oniru and Alausa Fire Crews confined the fire to the topmost floor of the three-storey building where it emanated from.

The building is being used for trading and storing textile. No injury or casualty was recorded in the incident.

The topmost floor affected two stores, second floor affected nine shops and three stores as both first and ground floor were protected from the severity of the fire.

Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said investigation into the cause of the incident commenced immediately.

Also, in similar development, goods worth millions of naira were burnt down by unidentified arsonists, who invaded Akere Motor Parts and Allied Dealers Market, in the Olodi-Apapa area of Lagos State.

The incident, which claimed the life of one Baba Hakeem, the security guard for the taxi park beside the market, was said to have been perpetrated by masked men.

According to eyewitnesses, his lifeless body was recovered near the scene of the incident in the early hours of yesterday.

It was gathered that the arsonists, after the announcement of the presidential election result had tried to set fire on the market but were chased out by two security guards, who were shot in the leg by the masked men.

Chairman, Akere Motor Parts and Allied Dealers Association, AMPADA, Izuchukwu Ubah said he received a call that their market was on fire.

“Last Thursday, these same people were here. I got a call as early as 1:28 a.m. that they were about to set our shops ablaze. I immediately reached out to the Police operatives because I live far from the market.

“They responded quickly and the masked men ran away, when they saw that the Police operatives with security on ground would overpower them, leaving behind the fuel that they wanted to burn the market with.

“I also reported the issue to the councillor of the area and he assured me with the DPO of Tolu Police Post that they would send a patrol team to protect the market.

“As early as 3a.m., yesterday, I got a call that some masked men with four motorcycles containing eight persons, and a shuttle with seven persons, including the driver had set our shops ablaze. I immediately reached out to the Police,” he said.
