Abakaliki, Nigeria – Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, wife of Gov. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, on Monday commiserated with the victims of Thursday’s gas explosion in the state.
The explosion which occurred at the Good Shepherd Catering School, Orokeonuoha, claimed the lives of two schoolgirls, while eight others are still with severe burns.
Ten girls undergoing training in the school were initially hospitalised.
Mrs Nwifuru, who visited the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where the victims were receiving treatment, appealed to the medical personnel to do their best to ensure that they recover from the injuries sustained.
She donated N2 million through her foundation, the Better Health for Rural Women Children and Internally Displaced, as support for their drugs and other incentives.
The wife of the governor also assisted Anita Afamuefuna, a nine-year-old girl with N2 million for surgical operation.
The Chief medical Director of the Hospital, Prof. Robinson Onoh, said the medical experts were committed to ensuring that the patients get all the necessary treatment.
Onoh, who was represented by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of the hospital, Dr Uchenna Nwedu, said 10 victims were brought in on Oct 17, and eight are receiving treatment in the Accident and Emergency Burns and plastic unit of the hospital.
“One was discharged after 24 hours admission while two died due to severe burns, 6 of them have major burns injury, more than 60 percent affectation, and they have been receiving and responding to treatment,” Nwedu said
On her part, Mrs Grace Nwankwoagu, Anita’s grandmother, appreciated Mrs Nwifuru for her financial support.
