The Recover Nigeria Project, a civil society organisation, has called for a comprehensive overhaul of the Police Command in Anambra State to enhance the security of residents.

Speaking at a news conference in Awka on Friday, the group’s convener, Mr Osita Obi, emphasised the need to address the state’s escalating security challenges.

Obi highlighted concerns about the prevalence of kidnapping, armed robbery, harassment, and murder, which have left residents in fear.

He argued that transferring police officers who have served in the state for over 30 years could help restore public confidence and improve security.

“In view of the present security situation in Anambra State, Recover Nigeria Project is calling for the overhaul of the police command in the state.

“Many police officers have served for over 30 years and should be transferred. This move will help tackle crimes and restore a safe and liveable homeland,” Obi said.

He also called for an investigation into the tenure of the former Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono-Itam, particularly regarding the escape of two suspects linked to the murder of Mr. Justice Azuka, a Labour Party lawmaker representing Onitsha-1 Constituency.

The suspects reportedly fled police custody during an operation to apprehend other accomplices.

“It is sad that under Nnaghe Obono-Itam’s watch, insecurity was at its peak. The escape of suspects linked to the murder of a lawmaker shows incompetence in handling security.

“He should be probed and sacked,” Obi stated.

The civil society leader commended Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for inaugurating “Agunaechemba,” a vigilante architecture designed to complement federal security forces and assist the police in combating crime in the state.
