The Anambra State Police Command and Guard Time Information (GTI) have condemned the alleged brutal abuse of a seven-year-old girl, Oluebube Ofoma, in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The Police said it received a report about the alleged abuse on the evening of September 13, 2026, after the child reportedly suffered severe bodily injuries.
Security personnel from Ibollo Community, Awada-Obosi, and concerned residents reportedly rescued the girl from further harm.
Police subsequently arrested her 32-year-old mother, Mrs Ogechi Ofoma, over the alleged incident.
Preliminary information indicates that the child allegedly suffered severe physical abuse, including injuries reportedly inflicted with a hot knife.
However, the Police said it had commenced an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has begun working with the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare and GTI to secure urgent medical care and protection for the victim.
The collaboration will also provide the child with counselling and other necessary welfare support.
The Police said the safety, welfare and best interests of the girl remain its priority.
The Command praised the Ibollo Community security personnel and residents for their vigilance and quick intervention.
It said their response helped rescue the child and allowed the Police to act promptly.
The Command assured the public that it would conduct the investigation professionally, thoroughly and within the law.
It added that anyone found culpable would face the full consequences of the law.
Speaking on the incident, GTI Chairman, Comrade Bibi Oduku, condemned the alleged abuse and called for justice for the victim.
He said the GTI Human Rights Activists Nationwide legal team in Anambra would closely monitor the case and work with relevant authorities to protect the child’s rights and welfare.
GTI Calls for Greater Vigilance
Furthermore, Oduku said the incident should remind Nigerians that child abuse, torture and other forms of violence against children remain unacceptable.
According to him, GTI will continue to support efforts to protect children, promote human rights and raise awareness about child-rights protection across Nigeria.
In response, the group urged parents, guardians, community leaders, security agencies and government institutions to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of child abuse or violence against vulnerable persons to the appropriate authorities.
The group stressed that protecting children remains a collective responsibility and that every child deserves to live in safety, dignity and freedom from violence and abuse.
