Major-General Abubakar Rabe, retired, has died while in captivity, two weeks after he was abducted by gunmen in Katsina State.

According to the Katsina state government, Abubakar, who was a former director of defence information, died in bandits’ captivity.

The former senior military officer was kidnapped alongside his wife around the Matazu area of the state while travelling to attend a wedding ceremony.

Sources confirmed on Saturday that the retired general died while being held by his abductors, although details surrounding the circumstances of his death were yet to be disclosed as of press time.

The abduction of the retired officer had sparked concern among residents and security stakeholders, given his military background and the worsening security situation in parts of the North-West.

His death adds to the growing list of victims of kidnapping and banditry activities in the region despite ongoing security operations by the military and other security agencies.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the development, while further details are being awaited.
