Hughton sacked after Black Stars’ disgraceful AFCON exit

The Ghana Football Association late Tuesday sacked Chris Hughton as head coach of the senior National team “with immediate effect”.

“The Executive Council has also decided to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars,” the FA said in a statement.

“The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Hughton was sacked following Black Stars’ woeful performance and eventual exit from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Cameroon scored twice with time ticking away on Tuesday to snatch a dramatic 3-2 win over Gambia, secure an Africa Cup of Nations last-16 place, and eliminate Ghana from the tournament.

A 2026 World Cup qualifying loss to minnows the Comoros last November had heightened calls for the dismissal of the ex-Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion boss.

Losing their opening group match in the Ivory Coast to lower-ranked Cape Verde only added to the pressure on the 65-year-old in his first Cup of Nations.

A draw with record seven-time champions Egypt after leading twice raised hopes that the Black Stars could still progress but another draw with Mozambique dashed the hopes of the Nigerian neighbours.
