Increase Investments In Renewable Energy Technology, Don Urges FG, Investors

Prof. Isaiah Akoteyon, a Professor of Environmental Management, in the University of Lagos on Thursday urged the Federal Government and private sectors to increase investments and prioritise renewable technology in order to improve its efficiency.

Akoteyon, an Acting Dean, Faculty of Environmental Services, University of Lagos, gave the advice during the Society of Energy Administrators (SEA) of Nigeria, Energy Administrators’ 6th Annual Conference and Induction of Associate Members, 2026 in Lagos.

The theme of the conference was tagged: ” Advancing Energy Process Environment Climate Adaptation Standardisation: Panacea For Climate Change and Sustainable Cities and Communities in Nigeria”.

The Acting Dean, in his presentation said that more funds should go into research and development in order to improve renewable energy efficiency, energy storage solutions, and grid integration.

“There should also be policy integration of environmental considerations.

“Governments should set stricter environmental regulations to limit emissions from fossil fuels, and this is a major standard,” he said.

Akoteyon said governments and private investors need to also promote energy efficiency technology.

“There’s a need for public awareness and education, this is very essential to raise public awareness about the importance of energy conservation.

“Campaigns that educate consumers on reducing energy use and adopting energy-efficient practices in our everyday life will significantly reduce carbon emissions and overall energy consumption.

“There is also the need for energy access as part of the recommendation on this presentation.

“Cross-border energy integration is very important, and I’m sure this body will look at all these recommendations,” he said.

Mr Sesan Odukoya, a Director of Oil and Gas in the Lagos Ministry of Environmental and Water Resources said the government was ready to collaborate with the society to ensure clean environment in Lagos metropolis.

Odukoya who represented Dr Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) commended the society for providing initiatives to protect clean environment for Nigeria and Lagos.

Dr Diran Fawibe, the Chairman, Society of Energy Administrators, said the society had worked tirelessly to ensure that the society succeed in their duties.

Fawibe commended the management of SEA for putting the Society in fore front.

Mr Ismaila Lawal, the Head, Electrical Laboratory, Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) said the activities of SEA was enormous and SON was happy to be part of it

Lawal urged the society to write the management of SON so that they would be involved in their daily activities.

In his opening remarks, Dr Yekeen Adeboye, the President and Project Director, SEA, commended FG for removal of electricity from the exclusive legislative list for energy security in all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

“As Energy Administrators, we applaud the courage and commitment of President Bola Tinubu in implementation of energy transition and climate change policies.

“We also commend creation of energy transition initiatives such as Auto CNG policy, use of electric vehicles and use of LPG as a cleaner energy in all households in Nigeria,” he said.

He said SEA is a professional body for energy operations compliance administrators.

“The body is grouped into two divisions namely Energy Process Engineering Compliance Administrators (EPECA) and Energy Compliance Administrators (EPMCA),” he said.

Adeboye assured that the society would continue to be a think tank in advancing and promoting energy administration for achieving sustainable development goals in Nigeria and worldwide in general.

Some of the inducted members told their oath and certificates were presented to them.
