
Gunmen killed no fewer than 40 people and injured several others during a Palm Sunday attack in Jos, forcing authorities to impose a curfew.
Attack Unfolds in Jos Community
Meanwhile, the attack hit Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba area of Jos on March 29, 2026, around 7:50 p.m. Residents fled as gunshots spread panic across the area.
Furthermore, eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the community and shot at unsuspecting residents. The gunmen later escaped before security forces arrived.
However, personnel of the Nigerian Army reached the scene around 8:45 p.m. They moved to restore calm and secure affected locations.
Casualties Rise, Tension Persists
Consequently, officials counted at least 26 bodies in the Angwan Rukuba axis during a visit on March 30, 2026. However, the total number of casualties across other areas remains unclear.
Furthermore, some victims were taken away during the attack. Others were rushed to hospitals and mortuaries for treatment and identification.
In response, tension remains high across the community. Authorities have advised residents to stay alert as security agencies work to stabilise the area.
Government Imposes Curfew
Meanwhile, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North. The restriction took effect from midnight on March 29 and will run until April 1, 2026.
Furthermore, the government introduced the measure to prevent further breakdown of law and order. Security agencies continue patrols across key flashpoints.
Governor Reacts, Orders Manhunt
However, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang condemned the killings and described the attack as barbaric and unprovoked.
Consequently, he assured residents that security agencies are pursuing those responsible. Authorities say they will intensify efforts to restore normalcy.
