More than 4,000 elders, professionals and community leaders from Kano State have endorsed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as their preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
The stakeholders made their position known at a town hall meeting attended by representatives from the 44 local government areas of Kano State.
The meeting was organised by the Office of the Special Assistant to Atiku Abubakar on Voter Engagement and Coordination, North-West Zone, under the leadership of Comrade Idris Ibrahim U/Gini, also known as Makama.
Professionals, Community Leaders Attend Meeting
The gathering brought together prominent elders, academics, engineers, lawyers, business leaders, retired civil servants, former military and paramilitary officers, community leaders and other stakeholders.
Delegations from North-West state teams and other interest groups also attended the meeting, highlighting the organisers’ efforts to strengthen grassroots engagement ahead of the 2027 general election.
Participants discussed Nigeria’s current challenges, the future of democracy and the need for citizens to participate actively in the electoral process.
Why Kano Elders Back Atiku
During the meeting, participants called for purposeful, competent and responsive leadership to address the country’s challenges and improve the welfare of Nigerians.
They subsequently reaffirmed their support for Atiku, the former vice president and Wazirin Adamawa, declaring him their preferred choice for the presidency in 2027.
The endorsement, according to the organisers, reflected the participants’ desire to contribute to decisions about Nigeria’s political future through democratic participation.
However, the endorsement represents the position expressed by the participants at the meeting and does not, by itself, establish the political preference of all residents of Kano State.
Stakeholders Stress Peaceful Democratic Participation
Beyond the endorsement, participants highlighted the importance of peaceful political participation, voter education and respect for democratic institutions.
They also stressed the need to protect citizens’ constitutional right to vote freely and make their choices without intimidation.
The organisers described the turnout from the 44 local government areas as a significant demonstration of interest among participating Kano elders and stakeholders in the 2027 electoral process.
At the end of the meeting, participants expressed satisfaction with the organisation of the event and departed in a celebratory atmosphere.
Organisers Promise More Grassroots Mobilisation.
The organisers pledged to sustain voter education, stakeholder consultations and grassroots mobilisation across Kano State and the wider North-West geopolitical zone ahead of the 2027 general election.
They said the initiative would continue to provide opportunities for citizens and community leaders to discuss national issues and participate in the democratic process.
The central message from the gathering was that participating Kano elders want their voices heard and their political preferences reflected through the ballot box in 2027.
