Mathew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, has commended the major political players in the just concluded presidential elections for respecting and upholding the principles enshrined in the peace accord that was signed by all political parties ahead of the election.

Kukah, who is the Convener of the National Peace Committee, disclosed this while featuring on Arise TV.

He said all the political actors and the 18 political parties deserve commendation on the peace accord.

“As a convener of the National Peace Committee, we watched diligently to see that the principles enunciated in the signing of the Peace Accord are implemented.

“Let me commend the key political actors because, despite where we find ourselves now, on balance, Nigerians must agree that the presidential candidates did conduct themselves in a manner and in a way that brought a lot of respect to politics and the political processes.

“They deserve our commendation because we didn’t experience the usual recriminations and so on and so forth,” he said.

However, the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, had disclosed during his world press briefing that he would be going to court to challenge the legitimacy of the outcome of the February 25, 2023, general elections.

“The rascality and illegality of the electoral process will be challenged in court. I will challenge this rascality for the future of the country,” Obi said.

Like the Labour Party, the Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has written off the February 25 poll, describing it as largely flawed.

He said: “Having consulted with leaders of our party who are seated here with me and Nigerians from different walks of life, I have come to the conclusion that the processes and outcome of the presidential and national elections on Saturday was grossly flawed by every single material and as such, must be challenged by all of us.”
