The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has marked the 2026 World Cleanup Day with coordinated sanitation exercises across strategic locations in Lagos.
LAWMA, Green Janitors Tackle Waste
The cleanup, carried out in partnership with Green Janitors, covered Igando Market, Badagry Roundabout, Olorunda and Lord Mayor’s Club in Badagry, as well as Oke-Afa Market in Isolo.
LAWMA personnel and Green Janitors worked together to remove accumulated waste and improve environmental conditions across the locations.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the exercise reflected the Authority’s commitment to sustained environmental sanitation, public participation and collective responsibility.
LAWMA Seeks Public Support
Gbadegesin said World Cleanup Day provided an opportunity to highlight the need for sustained action against indiscriminate waste disposal.
He urged individuals, communities, businesses and corporate organisations to play a greater role in protecting the environment and keeping public spaces clean.
The LAWMA boss also called on corporate organisations to support environmental sanitation, protection and the beautification of public spaces through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
He said such partnerships could complement government efforts and help sustain environmental improvements across Lagos.
Residents Urged to Stop Indiscriminate Dumping
Gbadegesin urged residents, traders, market associations, businesses and other stakeholders to sustain the gains of the cleanup.
He advised them to properly package their waste and hand it over to accredited Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for proper disposal.
He stressed that the message of World Cleanup Day should extend beyond the event, saying a cleaner Lagos required sustained behavioural change, responsible waste disposal and collective action.
The LAWMA chief said government, communities, businesses and residents must work together to maintain a cleaner and healthier environment across the state.
