As April approaches, the family of NBA veteran and former D’Tigers captain, Olumide Oyedeji, OLY, prepares to bid a final, glorious farewell to their matriarch, Madam Felicia Oyedeji.
Scheduled for April 9 and April 10, 2026, the funeral rites will serve not just as a period of mourning but as a vibrant celebration of the life of a woman whose 81-year journey was defined by unwavering faith, entrepreneurial grit, and a legendary devotion to her family.
Madam Felicia was more than just the mother of a global basketball icon; she was the silent architect of a legacy.
Following the early passing of her husband, she stepped into the dual role of provider and protector.
With six children to care for—including Olumide—she navigated the challenges of single parenthood with a grace that became the bedrock of her children’s success.
She didn’t just raise children; she raised leaders, instilling in them the discipline and resilience that would eventually take her son from the courts of Ibadan to the world stage of the NBA.
A native of Igbajo, Osun State, Madam Felicia’s life was deeply rooted in the values of the Christ Apostle Church (CAC) in Ibadan.
As a Deaconess, her commitment to her faith was absolute; it is poignant to note that she passed away peacefully on November 23, 2025, shortly after attending Sunday School—a final act of devotion in a life spent in service to God.
Beyond her spiritual life, she was a formidable businesswoman. Her entrepreneurial spirit ensured that, despite the odds, her household never lacked.
She balanced the ledgers of her trade with the same precision she used to guide her children’s moral compasses.
The upcoming funeral ceremonies are expected to draw dignitaries from the world of sports, business, and governance, as the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) and the global basketball community join the Oyedeji family in their tribute.
The Matriarch’s Departure: She leaves behind 6 children, numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A Lasting Impact: Her story is a testament to the power of a mother’s love—a love that single-handedly steered a family toward greatness.
As Olumide Oyedeji and his five siblings prepare for the rites in April, they do so with the knowledge that while the sun has set on her 81-year earthly journey, the light she kindled in her children continues to shine across continents.
The NOC president, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, speaking on behalf of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), expressed profound sadness following the transition of Mrs Felicia Oyedeji, the mother of legendary basketballer and NOC’s 3rd Vice President, Olumide Oyedeji.
“The transition of Mama Felicia Oyedeji is a deep loss, not only to the Oyedeji family but to the entire sporting community. –
She was a pillar of support and a source of inspiration who lived a fulfilled life, leaving behind a legacy of excellence through her children, especially Olumide, who has gone on to become a global sports icon.- End
