The Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration (NASFA) Apapa, Lagos in conjunction with the students of the Third Quarter Courses 2026 over the weekend, carried out a sanitation exercise especially on Canal 5 of the area to free the surrounding of debris, weeds, among others.
The Commandant, NASFA, Brig.-Gen. John Bulus said that the aim of the exercise was to free the canal from debris, blockages, weeds such as water hyacinth as well as reptiles that inhabit the canals because the canal runs through NASFA especially the students’ hostels and the cafeteria.
He added that the exercise would also create a conducive environment for learning for the next batch of students that would be coming in October.
“The dirty canal poses great health risks to the students whose accommodations are close to the canal.
“The clogged up canal creates a lingering foul smell in the air, causes breeding of malaria parasites, typhoid and also creates habitation for reptiles that might sneak into their hostels.
“So, this exercise is generally to keep the NASFA clean and assist the students that will be coming for the Fourth Quarter Courses to help improve the health situation and create a conducive atmosphere for learning,” he said.
Bulus said that the students started the sanitation from their classrooms to their hostel and down to the canal.
“Even though they might not be the beneficiary of this exercise because they are already leaving, they have done it for the incoming students that will be resuming in October.
“That is how it is being done on a quarterly basis but this time the sanitation was extended to include the cleaning of the canal and I thank them for their gesture,” he said.
The commandant said that it was not the responsibility of NASFA nor the students to clean the canal but that of the local government because the carnal had a long distance coming from Surulere local government and ending towards the lagoon.
“So, what we have done here today is just a minor remedy to clean the canal because it needs to be done from the beginning of the canal to the end where it terminates into the canal,” he said.
Bulus said that the exercise was inline with the Chief Of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu’s Command philosophy of sound administration and welfare to the troops of the Nigerian Army.
“I therefore thank the COAS for always approving all the necessary funds that this school desires and requires for sound administration and for always coming through to NASFA.
“In the same vein, I also want to thank the Chief of Accounts and Budget Army, Maj.-Gen. Taofik Sidick for always supporting this initiative,” the commandant said.
