The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The agency arrested two alleged kingpins, 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, alias Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George, after months of intelligence gathering and surveillance.
NDLEA said the suspects worked with Rodriguez Villanueva, a Mexican drug cartel member based in Mexico City.

The agency arraigned Christopher and Monday before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court, Enugu Judicial Division.
They face a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, organising, managing and financing a drug trafficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals used to produce methamphetamine.
The suspects pleaded to the charges. However, following an application by NDLEA for an accelerated hearing, the court fixed October 21, 2026, for trial.
The charge also lists Uchenna, alias Uche; Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu; and Villanueva as suspects. The three remain at large.
NDLEA uncovers commercial-scale meth lab
According to NDLEA, its Special Operations Unit tracked Christopher between Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states from December 1 to 4, 2025.
The surveillance eventually led officers to a compound in Obeagu, where they discovered a clandestine laboratory capable of producing methamphetamine in commercial quantities.
The laboratory contained improvised reactors and distillation equipment. NDLEA said the facility was similar to other clandestine laboratories recently dismantled in Ogun, Oyo and Ebonyi states.
A search of the premises uncovered large quantities of precursor chemicals linked to methamphetamine production.
The recovered substances included 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid, 290 litres each of toluene and acetone, and 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide.
Operatives also recovered 125kg of N-phenylacetamide, 414kg of lead acetate and 769.6kg of tartaric acid, among other controlled substances.
NDLEA said the quantity and type of chemicals were consistent with a high-potency, P2P-based methamphetamine production operation.
More chemicals, equipment recovered
A separate search of George’s family residence also produced equipment and chemicals linked to the operation.
NDLEA recovered eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11kg of ephedrine from the residence.
The agency said the discoveries further showed the scale of the alleged Nigerian-Mexican cartel’s activities.
Marwa warns drug cartels against Nigeria
Reacting to the operation, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), said the agency would continue to pursue suspects linked to the cartel.
Marwa commended the officers involved in the operation for what he described as professionalism and persistence in dismantling the international drug network.
He said the Enugu laboratory bust showed that Nigeria would not become a haven for transnational drug cartels.
According to him, NDLEA will continue to use intelligence-led operations and international partnerships to close loopholes exploited by local and foreign drug traffickers.
Marwa also directed NDLEA personnel to sustain enforcement efforts against illicit drug production and trafficking across the country.
