The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast cloudy weather, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across many parts of Nigeria from Wednesday to Friday, warning residents to prepare for strong winds and unsafe weather conditions.
According to NiMet’s weather outlook released in Abuja on Wednesday, August 5, several states in the North, North-Central and South will experience different levels of rainfall and thunderstorms over the next three days.
The agency warned that strong winds could accompany some storms and urged residents to stay alert.
On Wednesday morning, patches of clouds will cover the northern region.
Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa states. Meanwhile, the storms will spread to Kaduna and the entire North-East later in the day.
On Thursday, cloudy weather will continue across the region.
Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall will affect parts of Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe in the morning.
NiMet said thunderstorms with moderate rainfall will spread across most parts of the region later in the afternoon and evening.
By Friday, early morning thunderstorms and rainfall will affect parts of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba states.
The weather system will extend across the entire northern region later in the day.
NiMet also forecast cloudy skies across the North-Central region on Wednesday.
Light rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau and Nasarawa states during the morning.
Later on Wednesday, moderate rainfall and thunderstorms will affect Benue, Kogi, the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau states.
The agency expects widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across the region throughout Thursday.
On Friday, light rainfall is likely in parts of Nasarawa and Benue states during the morning.
Moderate rainfall and thunderstorms will spread across the region later in the day.
NiMet predicted generally cloudy skies across southern Nigeria on Wednesday morning, with light rainfall expected in parts of the South-South.
Later in the day, moderate rainfall will affect parts of Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, the South-East and the South-South.
On Thursday, moderate rainfall will continue in parts of Ondo and across the South-South during the day.
The South-East and South-South will receive more rainfall later in the day.
By Friday morning, light rainfall is likely across parts of the South-South.
Moderate rainfall will spread to parts of Ondo, Oyo, Enugu, Imo and other areas in the South-East and South-South later in the day.
NiMet Issues Safety Advisory
NiMet warned that strong winds could occur before rainfall in areas likely to experience thunderstorms.
The agency advised residents to fasten loose objects to reduce the risk of damage and injuries.
The agency urged motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall. It also advised residents to disconnect electrical appliances during storms and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of falling branches or uprooted trees.
NiMet asked airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports to support safe flight planning and operations. The agency also advised Nigerians to keep following its weather updates.
