
The National Women Leaders Forum (NWL Forum) of Political Parties in Nigeria and the United Nations Women have agreed to collaborate between the two organisations towards achieving inclusive democracy in Nigeria.
They made the agreement when a delegation from the NWL’s Forum, led by its President, Mrs Amina Darasimi, paid a courtesy visit to the UN Women in Abuja on June 18, 2025.
Hajiya Sa’adatu Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary NWL’s Forum, in a statement, said NWL Forum were received by a representative of the Country Director, Ms Beatrice Eyong, who was unavoidably absent but represented by the National Programme officer, Mrs Patience Ekeoba with other team members.
The UNWomen team representative narrated their areas of work and interventions in the country and expressed their happiness for the visit, stating the importance of the National Women Leaders Forum.
Darasimi, however, read out the forum’s position paper, saying that the National Women Leaders Forum is the umbrella of National Woman Leaders of registered political parties in Nigeria whose mission and vision is to ensure inclusive democracy.
She added that the Forum, is working towards seeing more women have the opportunity to be part of decision-making process within political party organs and during election to various offices.
She explained the role of National Working Committee of political parties of which they are members as the foundation level where decisions are made and implemented within political parties.
According to the President of NWL’s Forum Mrs Amina Darasimi, no one can contest election without being a member of a political party therefore, the National Woman Leaders of our various political parties have come together to use the instruments of their offices to assists and protect the interest of any woman who want to contest election within their political parties.
She added that the organisations are calling and seeking for collaboration with like-minded organizations such as the UNWomen to achieve their mission.
Amina Darasimi applauded the good gesture of the UNWomen owing to their consistent contribution in promoting gender equality and inclusive governance in Nigeria and across the world.
She also asked for unlimited support and collaboration in the areas of Advocacy; Capacity Building; Empowerment Initiatives and Technical assistance among others, stressing that the forum’s leader promised that they will always be available to support any projects of the UNWomen within the extant laws.
‘’After receiving the position paper, the representative of the Country director stated that the visit for the working relationship is timely especially with the bill seeking for the amendment of the constitution of Nigeria to reserve special seats in the Parliament for women.
‘’The UNWomen believe if the Forum added their voice within their individual political parties and collectively as an organization to sensitized and lobby the citizens the bill will surely scale through and be passed into law.
‘’She also promised that the Country director will look into the forum’s position paper and respond appropriately.’’
