Mrs Ijeoma Popoola, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday buried her father, Mr Bennett Okpara, who died at 85.

The funeral service held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Umuezedike attracted clergy, family, colleagues and community members.

The late Okpara, fondly called “Dimkpanabu,” was a lay-reader, pastor’s warden, chorister and financial secretary in his church and community.

Delivering the sermon, Rev. Obiora Okonkwo described the deceased as a devoted family man who lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation.

“Has anyone ever seen him misbehave or exhibit questionable character? None. That speaks volumes about his lifetime,” he said.

Popoola described her father as unique and selfless, noting that despite his modest income as a teacher, he gave his children quality education.

“Mpa, that I will miss you greatly is an understatement. You will forever occupy a place in my heart,” she said.

Mr Ikechukwu Okpara, son of the deceased, described his father as a role model and gifted teacher who served diligently for 35 years.

Chairman of Umuobom Teachers Association, Mr Chris Unachukwu, said the association would miss his counsel and support.

Mr Chinedu Nwoye, Anambra State Chief of Protocol and Deputy Chief of Staff, described the late Okpara as a bridge builder, visionary leader and mentor.

President General of Umuobom Ancient Kingdom Town Union, Mr Amos Anyalechi, said the community had lost a committed and devoted leader.

The wake-keep and service of songs were held on Thursday at the family compound, where tributes poured in from family, friends and associates.

A lying-in-state preceded the funeral service, which was attended by staff of NAN and other dignitaries.
