The Proprietor of the White Cloud School in Ebonyi, Mrs Chika Agwu, has advocated for the need to include Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the school curriculum in the country.
Agwu, Founder and Director of the Schools made the call during a Young Changemakers SDGs Summit, tagged “Small Hands, Big Impacts–Driving the Global Goals” in Abakaliki.
She explained that the summit targeting at young children in primary and secondary was good to educate the children on the need for big dreams and making positive impact.
“If we want a sustainable world, we must start by building sustainable minds.
“Let us include SDGs learning in every classroom. Let us support children to think critically about their communities. Let us guide them to not just chase success but to create significance,” she urged.
Agwu explained that making impact does not only begin with big money or big people, but begin with small hearts that care, small minds that think, and small hands that act.
“That is what we believe in our schools, teaching children about SDGs is not just extra curriculum; but essential curriculum. We teach responsibility, leadership, and global citizenship.
“In our Schools, we made a decision to bring SDGs out of textbooks and into classrooms, and to raise a generation of young people who do not just learn about the world but to change it.
“We want a situation, whereby the dreams of our students can shape the world,” she stated.
Agwu said that her school, White Cloud school had made significant progress in teaching the school children about SDGs.
“We have launched ‘Clean My Street’ campaign programme in the school and our pupils and students goes out at ensuring that the street are cleaned,”Proprietor explained.
On the 17 SDGs, Agwu said that it were designed by the United Nations as a roadmap for a better world.
“This, in turn aimed at ending poverty, protects the planet, and ensures peace and prosperity for all,” she said.
In her remarks, Mrs Esther Nwogha, Senior Special Assistant to Ebonyi Governor, Francis Nwifuru and Focal Person, SDGs said the summit was a welcome development in educating the young people’s minds.
According to Nwogha, the summit is seed of guidance, discipline and purpose planted in young hearts for greater tomorrow.
“Impact is not measured by age, title, or size but by the courage to act, the heart to care and the will to make a difference,” she said.
