The Senate at plenary on Wednesday confirmed the nomination of Dr. Solomon Arase, a retired Inspector-General of Police, as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission.

Arase had served as the 18th Inspector General of Police, after the sacking of Suleiman Abba in 2015.

Moving a motion for the confirmation of Arase, Sen. Mathew Urhoghide described him as a “round peg in a round hole.”

“The nomination of Dr. Arase is a round peg in a round hole. I want to urge my colleagues to expeditiously confirm Mr. Arase as Chairman of the Police Service Commission,” he said.

Urhoghide thanked Mr President for considering Arase and also nominating him and also commended him for doing a great job.

“Let me commend this Committee for this thorough job they have done. On behalf of the good people of Edo State, we want to thank Mr. President, C-in-C for nominating Dr. Solomon Arase to be appointed as Chairman of the Police Service Commission.”

Currently, the is a disagreement between the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, and the Police Service Commission (PSC) over his tenure elongation as Baba is due to retire in March.

Arase replaces the former Chairman of the commission, ex-lG Musliu Smith, who resigned in 2022.
