The Nigerian Senate has appointed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as the chairman of the newly established Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC). This announcement was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday.

As chairman, Kalu will oversee the commission’s efforts to address key issues in the South-East region, including infrastructure development, erosion control, security restoration, and civil restitution.

Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, previously served as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation. Senator Ken Eze (Ebonyi Central) has been appointed as the vice chairman of the committee.

The SEDC is one of several Regional Development Commissions established by President Bola Tinubu to promote economic growth and development in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

The commission’s 18-member board has also been confirmed, with Dr. Emeka Nworgu as chairman and Hon. Mark Okoye as managing director and CEO. The board members bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the commission, and are expected to play a key role in driving development in the South-East region.
