Shocking as 23-year-old barber docked for stealing gas cylinder

It was a shocking revelation as 23-year-old barber, Olawande Akinde, on Friday appeared before an Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State for alleged stealing of property to the tune of N69,500.

The defendant, whose address was not given, is facing a three-count charge bordering on burglary and stealing.

The prosecutor, ASP Zedekiah Orogbemi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Dec. 15, 2022, at 2.00 p.m., at No. 22, Temidayo Street in Okitipupa.

Orogbemi alleged that the defendant burgled the house of one Feyisara Odole and stole one three-kilogramme gas cylinder worth N10,000.

The prosecutor said that the defendant also stole a six-kilogramme gas cylinder worth N20,000 and a Tecno phone worth N9,500.

“The defendant also stole N30,000 cash, property of  Odole,” he said.

According the prosecutor, the offences are punishable under Sections 411, 412 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Chris Ojuola, granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 and two sureties in like sum.

Ojuola said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to Ondo State Government.

He adjourned the case until March 14 for further hearing.

Also, in a related development, an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of one Jamiu Sodiq, 31, a phone technician, in Kirikiri Correctional center for allegedly robbing a pedestrian of his iphone and money at gun point.

The Magistrate, Mrs M. F Onamusi, declined to take the defendant’s plea and ordered his  remand in custody pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). 

Onamusi thereafter adjourned the case until March 29 for mention

The defendant a resident of No. 25, Anobi St., Constain, Lagos is facing a two-point charge of conspiracy and  robbery.

The prosecutor, Insp Innocent Odugbo, told the court that the offences were committed on Jan. 20, on Idi-Iroko area, Anthony village, Lagos.

Odugbo said that the complainant, Mr John Chijioke, reported that he was on his way home when the defendant and one other person, still at large, who were riding on a motor bike, snatched his bag and sped away.

The prosecutor, said that the complainant listed the items in the bag to include, an iPhone 14 Pro Max valued at N1.1 million and N250,000 cash. 

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 296 and 299 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
