Students urge to tackle illegal mining in Osun State

Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL) has opened submissions for the 2025 SROL University Competition, calling on students from higher institutions across Osun State to submit bold, innovative, and sustainable ideas to help tackle illegal mining in Osun State and across Nigeria.

Themed “Innovative and Sustainable Solutions to Curtail Illegal Mining in Osun State and Nigeria at Large”, this initiative reflects SROL’s enduring commitment to environmental responsibility, youth empowerment, and grassroots community development.

The competition, which will run from Monday May 12 to Friday, June 6, 2025, calls on the creativity and intellect of young changemakers to propose real-world solutions that address one of Nigeria’s most pressing environmental and socio-economic challenges.

It is open to students across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Osun State.

Speaking on the launch, Austin Menegbo, SROL Country Manager, remarked, “At SROL, we believe in empowering the next generation of leaders to shape the future. This competition is more than an academic exercise, it is a platform to elevate youth voices, reward research and innovation, and turn brilliant ideas into actionable change. Illegal mining is a challenge we can solve, and we must do it together, starting now.

The competition is designed to ignite critical thinking and celebrate forward-thinking, sustainable innovation.

Winners will receive cash prizes of ₦500,000 for first place₦300,000 for second, and ₦200,000 for third. To participate, students are required to submit a research paper (2,000–5,000 words) addressing the theme, covering introduction, problem statement, proposed solutions, implementation plan, conclusion, and references.

All entries must be original and submitted via email to sustainabilitycompetition@srol.com.ng with the subject line: “2025 SROL University Competition Submission – [Your Name], [Your University]”, e.g. 2025 SROL University Competition Submission – Temitope Ayeni, Osun State University.

The competition’s timeline is as follows:

  • Launch: May 12, 2025
  • Submission Deadline: June 6, 2025
  • Evaluation Period: June 9 – June 30, 2025
  • Award Ceremony: July 15, 2025

Entries will be reviewed by Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI), an independent consultant renowned for its integrity and expertise in youth-centered evaluation.
