Awka, April 3, 2024 – The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra State Chapter has expressed worries over the deteriorating condition of Awka Township Stadium.

The body of sports writers said this in a Communique issues after its March Congress in Awka.

The Communique which was signed by Chimezie Anaso and Ikenna Nwokedi, the

“The Congress noted with displeasure, the collapse of the Awka City Stadium Football Pitch completed in December 2021, the tracks which are not in use as well as the pavilion which is begging for urgent and comprehensive rehabilitation.

“SWAN called the state government and the contractor to interface with a view to addressing these issues.

“The Congress called on the state government to give Awka City a befitting stadium by completing other aspects of the stadium including installation of an electronic scoreboard, floodlights and construction of a second pavilion,” he said.

SWAN endorsed the second edition of the School Sports Festival, a flagship Programme of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission and commended Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for his support for the sector.

It further called on Soludo to provide more and timely funding for the sports sector to enable the Commission to identify and nurture future champions.

“SWAN reiterates its commitment to partner the Anambra government Corporate organisations and individuals to promote sports.

“The Congress renewed the call for proper constitution of the various sports associations to ensure regular sports programmes and activities,” it stated.
