July 24, 2025, a catastrophic aviation disaster occurred in Russia’s eastern Amur region, involving an Antonov An-24 aircraft operated by Angara Airlines. The flight, which was en route to Tynda, a town near the Chinese border, tragically crashed, claiming the lives of all 49 people aboard. The crash is being investigated by Russian authorities, with early reports suggesting that poor visibility during the landing could have played a significant role in the incident.

The Ill-Fated Flight and Immediate Response

The flight, which had left a regional airport earlier in the day, was scheduled to land in Tynda. However, moments before it reached its destination, the aircraft disappeared from radar screens. The plane was carrying 43 passengers, including five children, and six crew members. The identities of the passengers are yet to be officially released by the authorities, but the confirmed fatalities include everyone on board.

In the wake of the crash, Russian emergency response teams sprang into action. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) reported that search-and-rescue teams were immediately mobilized to locate the wreckage. A Mi-8 helicopter, operated by Rosaviatsiya, the Russian civil aviation authority, played a key role in locating the crash site. After an extensive aerial search, the burning fuselage of the aircraft was identified by the rescue helicopter, situated about 10 kilometers away from the intended landing strip in the remote forested area of the Amur region. The wreckage confirmed that no survivors were found, and all 49 individuals on board perished in the crash.

The region where the crash occurred is known for its rugged terrain, making rescue operations especially challenging. However, the swift deployment of resources allowed authorities to quickly locate the site and begin the recovery process.

Investigations and Early Findings

The cause of the crash is being thoroughly studied by the Russian side, with the Russian Investigative Committee among those conducting the investigation. There are indications that the crew may have lost track of the final approach procedure, perhaps due to a navigation error, and was not able to correct the landing path due to low visibility in the area. The dense clouds and poor visibility and fog likely made it impossible for the crew to safely land. The study will be looking at the possibility that it was a human error or a mechanical problem that might have caused the accident.

Despite the fact that the cause the crash is still unofficial, being in such inclement weather suggests a mistake may have occurred when the crew was trying to land. The aircraft was an Antonov An-24, a Soviet turboprop plane that has been a workhorse for regional flights in Russia. The plane has been in service for years, and that track record has had a handful of fire-related incidents, spurring concern about its safety record.

Angara Airlines, which is headquartered in Irkutsk, has a fleet of 22 aircraft and runs services to mostly remote parts of Siberia and the Far East. Although the airline has overall a very good safety record, the RA-46620 has put the ongoing safety of its fleet into question and its operational policies into scrutiny.

A Community in Mourning

The loss of 49 lives has deeply affected not only the families and loved ones of the victims but also the local community of Tynda. The town, which has a population of just around 15,000, is now reeling from the shock of the disaster. Local authorities have pledged full support to the families of those who perished in the crash, including assisting with the identification of the victims and providing psychological support to those affected by the tragedy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and instructed the appropriate government agencies to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into the crash. He has also emphasized the importance of improving safety protocols across the Russian aviation industry to prevent future tragedies of this nature.

In the wake of the crash, various Russian and international airlines, as well as aviation safety organizations, have expressed their sympathy and solidarity with the victims’ families. The tragedy has also drawn attention to the ongoing challenges faced by Russia’s aviation sector, particularly in the country’s remote and challenging terrain.
A Jeju Air plane carrying 181 people from Thailand to South Korea crashed on arrival Sunday, smashing into a barrier and bursting into flames, killing everyone aboard except for two flight attendants plucked from the wreckage.

A bird strike was cited by authorities as the likely cause of the crash — the worst ever aviation disaster on South Korean soil — which flung passengers out of the plane and left it “almost completely destroyed”, according to fire officials.

Rescue personnel are seen near the tail section of a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 series aircraft after the plane crashed and burst into flames at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province, some 288 kilometres southwest of Seoul on December 29, 2024. (Photo by YONHAP / AFP)

Video showed the Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 landing on its belly at Muan International Airport, skidding off the runway as smoke streamed out from the engines, before crashing into a wall and exploding in flames.

“Of the 179 dead, 65 have been identified,” the country’s fire agency said, adding that DNA retrieval had begun.

Inside the airport terminal, tearful family members gathered to wait for news.

An official began calling out the names of the 65 victims who had been identified, with each name triggering fresh cries of grief from waiting relatives.

Only two people — both flight attendants — were rescued from the crash, the fire department said.

“Passengers were ejected from the aircraft after it collided with the wall, leaving little chance of survival,” a local fire official told families at a briefing, according to a statement released by the fire brigade.

“The plane is almost completely destroyed,” he was quoted as saying.

Both black boxes — the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder — have been found, deputy transport minister Joo Jong-wan said at a briefing.

Under floodlights, rescue workers used a giant yellow crane to lift the burned-out fuselage of the orange-and-white aircraft on the runway at Muan — some 288 kilometres (about 180 miles) southwest of Seoul.

Bits of plane seats and luggage were strewn across the field next to the runway, not far from the charred tail, offering a glimpse into the catastrophic impact of the crash.

‘Mayday’

All of the passengers were Korean apart from two Thais, with the youngest a three-year-old boy and the oldest a 78-year-old, authorities said.

“I had a son on board that plane,” an elderly man waiting in the airport lounge, who asked not to be named, told AFP.

“My younger sister went to heaven today,” a 65-year-old woman, who gave only her surname Jo, told AFP.

The accident took place in a matter of minutes as Jeju Air Flight 2216 tried to land — with the control tower issuing a warning of a bird strike, and the pilot soon after calling “mayday”.

“It took approximately three minutes from the control tower’s mention of a bird strike warning to the aircraft’s attempt to land on the runway again,” an official said.

Video shows the plane coming off the tarmac and hitting a wall, but officials dismissed speculation that the length of the runway was a factor in the crash.

Lee Jeong-hyun, chief of Muan fire station, said the cause was “presumed to be a bird strike” but that the exact details would be announced after a full investigation.

Low-cost carrier Jeju Air said it “sincerely” apologised — with top officials shown bowing deeply at a press conference in Seoul — and vowed to do all it could to help.

Boeing said in a statement that it was in touch with Jeju Air and stood “ready to support them”.

Engulfed in flames

South Korea’s acting President Choi Sang-mok, who only took office Friday, convened an emergency cabinet meeting and then visited the crash site at Muan.

“The entire government is working closely together to manage the aftermath of the accident… making every effort to ensure thorough support for the bereaved families,” he said.

The country declared a seven day national mourning period effective from Sunday, with memorial altars to be set up nationwide.

Boeing said in a statement that it was in touch with Jeju Air and stood “ready to support them”.

It is the first fatal accident in the history of Jeju Air, one of South Korea’s largest low-cost carriers, which was set up in 2005.

On August 12, 2007, a Bombardier Q400 operated by Jeju Air carrying 74 passengers came off the runway due to strong winds at the southern Busan-Gimhae airport, resulting in a dozen injuries.

South Korea’s aviation industry has a solid track record for safety, experts say.

A number of fatal aviation accidents have occurred globally due to bird strikes, which can cause a loss of power if the animals are sucked into the air intakes.

In 2009, a US Airways Airbus A320 famously landed in New York’s Hudson River after bird strikes on both of its engines, in an incident widely known as the “Miracle on the Hudson” because there was no loss of life.

Scores of people were killed on Sunday when a passenger jet crash-landed at an airport in southwestern South Korea, with the aircraft careening down the runway on its belly before bursting into flames.

At least 122 people have been confirmed dead so far, according to the local fire department. Two people, both crew members, were pulled alive from the crash site however rescuers have warned there is little hope of finding further survivors.

Jeju Air flight 7C 2216 from Bangkok was carrying 175 passengers and six crew when disaster struck at the airport in Muan county, just after 9 a.m. local time Sunday (7 p.m. ET Saturday). The accident was caused by a landing gear malfunction, officials said.

Footage of Sunday’s crash broadcast by multiple South Korean news outlets showed the plane sliding on its belly at high speed, hitting an earthen embankment and erupting in a fireball.

Neither the back nor front landing gear was visible in the footage – broadcast by networks including YTN, JTBC and MBC – as smoke poured from the back of the sliding aircraft.

Firefighters were later seen using water cannons to extinguish the blazing wreckage of the aircraft, which was listed as a Boeing 737-800 on flight-tracking site FlightAware. Several parts of the aircraft were also seen strewn across the runway.

The victims include 54 males, 57 females, and 11 people whose gender could not be determined, according to the South Jeolla Fire Service. Both of the survivors were crew members, one male and one female, according to the rescue team.

Two Thai nationals were among those on board, according to the South Korean Land Ministry, which said officers from the national Incident Investigation Committee had arrived to look into what caused the accident.

Rescue workers will search for the “black box” flight data recorders after recovering the bodies of the remaining victims, the Transport Ministry said in a briefing. The recorders offer aviation safety investigators critical facts when piecing together what happened after an incident.

More than 700 personnel from the police, military, and coast guard have been mobilized for on-site response efforts, the ministry added.

Boeing extended its condolences to those who lost loved ones in the crash.

“We are in contact with Jeju Air regarding Flight 2216 and stand ready to support them,” Boeing said in a short statement posted to its X account.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones and our thoughts remain with the passengers and crew,” the company added.

The US aviation giant has had a turbulent time in recent years, including two 737 Max crashes, a tragedy for which the company agreed to plead guilty to deceiving the Federal Aviation Administration during the certification process for the plane.

However, analysts have described the Boeing 737-800 as a reliable workhorse of the skies with an extremely strong safety record.

Jeju Air’s chief executive said the aircraft had shown “no signs of issues” prior to Sunday’s accident.

“At this time, it is difficult to determine the cause of the accident, and we have to wait for the official announcement of the investigation by the relevant government agency,” Kim Yi-bae said during a press briefing at the airport.

South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, arrived at the crash site in the early afternoon. Choi had earlier instructed emergency responders to mobilize “all available” equipment and personnel to respond to the crash, according to a press release by the interior and safety ministry.

The tragedy comes only two days into Choi’s acting presidency, the latest chapter in a time of political chaos in South Korea.

The country’s current president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was stripped of his powers by parliament two weeks ago following a short-lived martial law order that plunged the country into political disarray. He is currently suspended while a top court decides his fate.

Han Duck-soo, the man who stepped in to replace Yoon as acting president, was impeached by parliament on Friday, meaning Choi – the finance minister and deputy prime minister – stepped in for him.

Sunday’s crash is “very perplexing” given that both the aircraft and carrier have a strong safety record and flying conditions were excellent, an aviation journalist said.

The Boeing 737-800 is one of the most widely used aircraft in the world and each one is used for about four or five flights per day, Geoffrey Thomas, editor of Airline News, told CNN’s Paula Newton.

“It is the most reliable aircraft in the world, and it’s been in service for 20 years,” he said. “Everybody knows how it works. And it works really, really well. And the maintenance done in [South] Korea is as good as it gets around the world.”

South Korean fire officials have said there may have been a landing gear malfunction and footage showed the aircraft sliding on its belly.

“It’s a little bit unclear whether or not the undercarriage collapsed on landing or whether the undercarriage was not deployed at all. This is a really serious issue that obviously investigators will be very much focused on,” Thomas said.

He added “it is perplexing” that the crash happened, given it was landing under dry and sunny conditions at a good airport.
The chief of Russian mercenary group, Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, is believed to have been killed in a plane crash, Russian state media reported Wednesday.

The aircraft, a business jet, crashed in the Tver region northwest of Moscow, with all 10 people onboard killed, according to Russian authorities.

While Russian officials said that Prigozhin was on the passenger list, it was not immediately clear if he was in the aircraft.

“An investigation of the Embraer plane crash that happened in the Tver Region this evening was initiated. According to the passenger list, first and last name of Yevgeny Prigozhin was included in this list,” Russia’s Federal Agency for Air Transport said in a statement.

The plane was flying from Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow to St. Petersburg, state news agency Tass reported, according to a Google translation.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Services wrote on its Telegram account: “In the Tver region, near the village of Kuzhenkino, a private Embraer Legacy aircraft crashed while flying from Moscow to St. Petersburg. There were 10 people on board, including 3 crew members.”

“According to preliminary information, all on board were killed. EMERCOM of Russia is conducting search operations,” the post read, according to a Google translation.

The 62-year old paramilitary leader, once a close confidant of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s, led a short-lived mutiny against the Russian government in late June after spending months vocally criticizing his country’s top brass.

His forces, known for their particularly violent battlefield tactics, spearheaded a number of battles for Russia on the Ukrainian front.

An apparent deal was made between Prigozhin and Putin after the aborted coup, which was meant to see the Wagner Group leader and his forces relocate to Belarus, with Prigozhin himself pledging to leave Russia for good. It is unclear why the aircraft he was listed as being on was near Moscow.
The post Wagner boss, Prigozhin, feared dead in plane crash appeared first on 108 Scoop.
