ANNABA, Algeria –The Camp Commandant for Team Nigeria at the inaugural African School Games, Abdullahi Ahmed has commended the young athletes for their exemplary conduct and discipline.

According to the Commandant, who was appointed by the National Sports Commission (NSC) to oversee the 10 teams representing the country, the athletes have been outstanding ambassadors.

The team prepared for the competition with a two-week training camp in Nigeria before traveling to Annaba.

“The boys and girls have conducted themselves very well,” he stated. “They have not betrayed the trust placed in them, and there have been no causes for concern.”

He noted that the team has also shown maturity in adapting to their environment.

While the athletes and officials are served the same local food—which differs from the Nigerian dishes they are accustomed to—they have managed the situation professionally after some initial complaints.

This discipline off the field appears to be translating directly into success on the ground

“Despite any initial complaints about the food, winning medals has not been a problem for the athletes,” the Commandant said.

“A gold rush has been running through the team, especially since the start of athletics, which is Nigeria’s area of strength.”

He also confirmed that a dedicated five-man medical team is on hand to support the national team and ensure the athletes remain in peak condition.
