
Traditional rulers in the Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State have pledged their full support to combat sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in their communities.
This commitment was made during a gathering at the Udi Local Government Area headquarters, where the monarchs vowed to work with the West Africa Broadcast and Media Academy Foundation to create a safer environment for women and children.
His Royal Highness Justice Ken Ezeike, Head of the Udi Council of Traditional Rulers, emphasized the importance of eradicating SGBV, stating that “the health, safety, and well-being of our people depend on the actions we take today” .
The traditional rulers’ declaration marks a significant milestone in the collective fight against SGBV, demonstrating the potential for traditional institutions and governments to collaborate for meaningful change.
The Chief Operating Officer of WABMA Foundation, Mrs. Chidiebere Njoku-Chukwu, highlighted the need for robust documentation of SGBV cases and the importance of traditional rulers in shaping societal norms and fostering positive change.
The role of women in combating SGBV was also emphasized during a separate session with the Council of Wives of Traditional Rulers.
WAMBA Foundation Chief Mobilisation Officer, Mrs. Nnenna Anozie, urged women to take an active role in the fight against SGBV, stating that “each action contributes to building a safer environment for all”.
This collective effort aims to create a future where everyone, especially women and children, can live free from violence and fear.
