
A 100-level student of the Federal University of Technology Akure, Favour Olaniyi, was allegedly found dead near his off-campus residence on Saturday, May 9, 2026, in an incident now under police investigation.
What Happened
Sources alleged that some fellow students found the undergraduate lifeless near his residence. They alleged that he may have consumed a poisonous substance suspected to be an insecticide.
However, the university has not confirmed claims that the student took his own life. Authorities said investigators would determine the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, the case has sparked concern among students and residents around the Akure campus community.
In response, FUTA management said it quickly alerted security agencies after receiving reports of the incident.
The institution’s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Adegbenro Adebanjo, said university security officers informed the police immediately.
Furthermore, police officers moved to the scene, while medical officials and security operatives coordinated the evacuation of the body to the morgue.
Parents Informed, Probe Begins
Meanwhile, the university confirmed that the student’s parents had received notice of the tragedy.
Consequently, police have started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. FUTA also pledged full cooperation with law enforcement authorities.
Furthermore, the institution expressed sympathy to the family and described the incident as unfortunate.
Counselling Support for Students
In response, FUTA said its Student Affairs Division has started counselling support for students affected by the incident.
However, the university also urged students facing emotional, personal, or academic pressure to seek help through available support channels.
